Burren Lowlands
Burren Lowlands
This 75km mostly flat route will take you through the limestone lowlands of the Burren in County Clare one of Ireland’s most distinctive landscapes, where vast grey pavements of cracked rock are softened by wildflowers, green valleys and ancient stone walls. Beneath the rugged surface lies a region rich in history and folklore, dotted with early Christian ruins, isolated farmhouses and dramatic hills.
Among its most striking landmarks is Kilmacduagh Monastery, famous for its remarkably well-preserved round tower rising above quiet countryside that has remained largely unchanged for centuries. You will then pedal towards Mullaghmore, the symbolic heart of the Burren National Park, its rocky slopes and sweeping views capturing the wild beauty of the region.
The area also became internationally recognised as the filming location for the beloved comedy Father Ted, with the iconic Father Ted’s House drawing visitors eager to see the remote farmhouse that became one of Ireland’s most famous television settings. Together, these landmarks reflect the Burren’s unique blend of natural beauty, heritage and cultural charm.
Extra caution is also required as you leave the food stop in Kilnaboy National School as you exit out onto the R476 the main road to Ennis. You return home through the Village of Corofin, a busy village and be prepared to stop due to traffic. As you exit Corofin there is a narrow bridge, proceed with caution. You will turn Left out the road for Ruan and Dromore Nature Reserve before heading for Barefield.
